Looking to add some non-OEM sensors to your car, and have them show up as sensors in smartphone(or tablet) apps like Torque, Dash Command and similar ?
This little credit-card sized box will take up to 5 external sensors(for pressures and temperatures of any kind) and add them on your cars's lists of sensors that can be picked up by smartphone apps like Torque. This way you can monitor and log them whenever you like, and take no space on your dashboard when you don't need them. Works wonders with modern aftermarket radio setups that can be paired to an OBD2 Bluetooth dongle and run Android apps.
How does it work ?
The same way that your OEM engine computer lets you see RPM, coolant temperature, and anything else you know of.
In the same fashion, this kit will add new sensors for your car app to read and display:
Example of additional sensors that can be used with this kit:
- oil pressure
- oil temperature
- boosted air pressure - relative to ambient or absolute
- boosted air temperature
- fuel pressure
- fuel temperature
- fuel ethanol content
- fuel tank level
- mass air flow sensors(5V max. output)
- wideband oxygen sensors (only with standalone controller)
- any active voltage output sensor (up to 5V)
- any variable resistance sensor
- any other aftermarket or OEM sensor that outputs an analog or digital voltage
Pre-configured versions include the sensors, wiring harnesses and mounting adapters needed.
For the DIY-oriented crowd, the kit can also do other things! Besides the 5 analog inputs, you get 6 general purpose digital input and output pins (4 PWM pins, 1 UART bus,1 I2C bus, 1 SPI bus). Let me know what you have in mind!
In total, the kit can do:
- 1 CAN network(using OBD2 standards and custom PIDs which are predefined and easy to use). NOTE! CAN network must be at 500kbps high speed, 11 bit identifier. For example - MX5 NC(all years) and RX8(all years) are compatible!
- 3 analog voltage inputs in the 0-5V range
- 2 analog voltage inputs in the 0-15V range
- 2 temperature sensor inputs (NTC type), pull up resistors available are 10kOhm and 470Ohms
An easy way to determine if your car is compatible is to connect to your car using any OBD2 dongle(example ELM327) and the Torque app (for smartphones). Then go to Adapter Settings and scroll down to OBD2 protocol:
If that's the case then your car is compatible!
The kit can is offered as a bare bones version where you can build your own wiring harness to suit exactly your use-case, or as a pre-configured version that supports oil pressure and oil temperature.
Bare bones version | Prewired version - oil pressure and temperature |
sends up to 5 new additional sensors to Torque or similar apps | sends true, measured oil pressure and temperature to Torque or similar apps |
you build your own wiring harness(or have me build one for you) | uses 2 pairs of 4 pin connectors - one for power and data, the other for oil pressure and temp sensors |
you select what sensors to use, then wire them as you like | includes oil pressure and temperature sensors, mounting hardware, and wiring harness |
All kits have the following features and requirements:
needs any OBD2 dongle to connect to your car and smartphone/tablet |
needs a factory ECU, that runs CAN bus at 500kb/s and 11 bit identifier |
needs ignition key switched 12V, ground, and OBD2(CAN data) wires |
use any OBD2 dongle with wireless capabilities |
use any Android/iOS app that allows custom parameters(PIDs) |
create your own gauge layout and units of measurement, to suit your liking |
install and setup once, then forget it even is there |
Note for Mazdaedit users! Support is offered to log any parameter from this OBD2 Expander into ME!
